Truck Drivers

Road Rage

I was almost hit by a truck driver with a double load.

I was driving home from work last night after a long day, i got on the free way and was in the slow lane because a semi was in the left lane. there was a bend going around some construction on I-15 (they're widening the interstate to accomidate the growth Utah has seen). this semi is getting really close to me and i just thought that maybe he took the turn a little to wide. but he kept going into my lane, and i was stuck where the trailer hitch that connects the first and second trailers together. i down shifted my car into fourth gear so i could get up in front of him becuase there was an SUV behind him. i was litterally driving in the emergancy lane trying to speed past him. there are some spots where the emergency lane was non existant, and i happened to be advancing on just that part. so i got in front of him, and i thought i was going to knick the back of my bumper on the truck...which would mean i would certainly flip my car ( i was doing about 90 mph in order to pull on him) so i get infont of him, and back on the road, and he flips ME off! i was astonished! he almost ran me off the road, could've hit me and he flips me off! i don't understand that...i can understand a mistake and if i was in his blind spot...but its not like i was driving in the emergancy lane just for the heck of it!

not the brightest or the best are semi drivers.

Just wait until they pull the crap they did back in the 80's (?) when they blocked all lanes on the multi-lane highways by driving side by side.  This was to prove something or other that nobody remembers and wasn't worth a hoot anyway.  In retaliation, certain folks began shooting at them from overpasses.  What a world.

you can treat them with respect yes, but when they get into your lane, and then flip YOU off because you had to cut in front of them, than they lost all my respect.

I understand the contempt that most people have for truck drivers but please remember that there are bad drivers in commercial vehicles as well as bad drivers in cars. A commercial driver encounters more bad drivers in a couple weeks than most people in cars encounter in a year! Some commercial drivers drive an average of 4000 miles per week! When I drove I averaged just over 5000 miles per week! That's over a quarter of a million miles per year! Most people who drive over the road have over a million logged miles on record per 4 or 5 years. Can you even imagine? Driving over 250,000 miles per year? And they're very closely monitored by the FMCSA! "The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration" Check them out yourself! http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/! I just want people to understand that when you play with one of those big vehicles it's much more dangerous than you think! You may not even be messing with anyone but if you're around one and you just keep hanging around beside them, behind them, in front of them, speed up when they go to pass you just remember that you're flirting with disaster! That truck may weigh 15 or more times more than your vehicle and may be 10 times the size. The top of the hood of most big trucks comes even with the top of a full size van! If you've never driven a commercial vehicle you have no idea what they may or may not see or be able to do. Just because you think you have the right of way dosn't mean that driver sees you there or that you're going to keep your place for what ever reason you have of being there. If that driver made some obscene jesture at you more than likely you did something that you're completely oblivious to and although he shouldn't have made that jesture, you should have been way ahead or behind that vehicle before the construction you obviously knew was comming up! When you start playing with one of those big commercial vehicles you're only playing with disaster! There have been many professional drivers who have lost their lives only to keep from running over someone who was oblivious to what was going on around them. Careless people in cars cause the death of a lot of good, decent people and that's a very sad fact! If you hate trucks and truck drivers then more than likely you've never been in one and don't have a clue to what really is going on when you're driving. You should try to drive one! I'm sure you think it's really easy! So why don't you try it then? I guarantee that when you get into the drivers seat, look in the mirror and see the 53 foot trailer and it looks more like 100 feet long the first time! You don't know what is really going on until you've been in the driver's seat of a vehicle that has at least 18 wheels. You have no idea what they had to do and know to be able to maneuver that vehicle through a gauntlet of careless people who have a vehicle that they can push the right pedal down and zoom away. Instead the majority of them have to play dangerous just because they think that driver is messing with them. There are some bad commercial drivers out there and they never last long because most companies won't hire a driver with 6 or more points on their driving record mostly due to the insurance companies refusing to cover them because they have to cover one commercial driver for millions of dollars.

If I had been you I would have braked.  If the SUV didn't let you in then you could have gotten in behind that driver.  I've nearly been run off the road by a garbage truck, so I can understand how scarey it is.  I was honking like mad, and he kept pushing me over to the shoulder.  The worst part is that the person behind me didn't back off so I could slow down.  The prick nearly rear ended me every time I stepped on the brakes.  Finally I got in behind the garbage truck and called the police, called the city, called just about everyone I could think of and made a complaint about the driver.  Not sure if it did any good, but I hope so.

From your own description, you were driving recklessly.
  1. It is likely he didn't see you.  From your description, you were riding in his blind spot, in a lane that was about to end.
  2. Speeding up to try and be the first in line is an aggressive maneuver.  From his perspective, you came out of no-where doing 90 and cut him off.  I would have flipped you off too.
  3. When you approach a merge, you SLOW DOWN!  If the SUV didn't move, SLOW DOWN SOME MORE!  If you are that tight on time to switch lanes you are driving TOO FAST!

Make no mistake, I am no fan of truckers.  It has been years since I have seen one do anything courteous.  But in this case, I think you are screaming foul because you don't want to admit that you almost killed yourself by driving recklessly.
