My "friend" has had increasingly self-inflicted economic problems for years. One of us (me) watched my spending, tried to make ends meet by gardening in order to supplement our food bill, sewing, lots of home cooking and baking, etc./all a continuous effort. I and my family always had used or really old cars (one is eligibile for historic plates, even though we still use this truck), my friend always had new cars every 5 years.
She asked to borrow money because she was being foreclosed on. My first suggestion was for her to downsize to a used car, get rid of the cable TV, make her adult live-at-home kids get jobs and pitch in, etc. She became perturbed and said she deserved all those things. Of course, no money was loaned. They say money breaks up friendships. How true.
